EUGENE ‘GENE’ SMITH

Eugene "Gene" Smith, who pitched in the Negro Leagues for the Atlanta Black Crackers in 1938, the Ethiopian Clowns and the St. Louis Stars in 1939, the New Orleans Stars in 1940-41, the Kansas City Monarchs in 1941, the New York Black Yankees in 1942, the Pittsburgh Crawfords in 1946, the Homestead Grays in 1946-47, the Cleveland Buckeyes from 1946-50, and the Chicago American Giants in 1951.

Gene also played baseball in Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico and 1 year of Minor League baseball in 1952.

He threw three no-hitters during his career as a power pitcher. He was part of the Cleveland Buckeye team that won the Negro American League pennant in 1947. His brother, Quincy Smith, also played in the Negro Leagues
