Al McCoy was born on Aug. 12, 1928 in St. Petersburg where he graduated from Gibbs High School in 1946.

Al played as an infielder for the 1946 Indianapolis Clowns and 1947 New York Black Yankees.  He went on to attend Florida A&M University from 1947 to 1951.

He was a star second-baseman at FAMU and made the All Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, becoming the first second-baseman to earn this distinction. In 1956, McCoy became the 10th black player to sign with the Major League Philadelphia Phillies.
