PAUL ‘COUNTRY JAKE’ STEPHENS

Born: Feb. 1900
Died: Feb. 1981

Jake was a seventeen year veteran of the Negro Leagues.

He played primarily as a shortstop (and occassional second baseman) for the Hilldale Club (1921-29), Homestead Grays (1929-32), Pitts. Crawfords (1932), Philadelphia Stars (1933- 35), and New York Black Yankees (1936-37). He played on four different championship teams during his career.

He was considered to be fast, smart, and with a good arm. A great fielder with the ability to make spectacular plays.
