Jose was a pitcher who discovered while playing barefoot in Cuba.  His Negro League career with spent playing for the Memphis Red Sox from 1948 to 1950. Jose was once presumed to have died in Mexico, but was actually living in the streets of Washington, D.C.

This photo taken by Donald Gakenheimer (formerly with the Bowie Baysox) shows Jose stretching it out in the dugout prior to a Baysox game.
