The Philly Stars originated from the suburb of Darby, Pa. Originally called the Hilldale Giants, the Stars won the 1934 Negro National League pennant.

This team, organized by Ed Bolden in 1933, starred "Biz" Mackey, Dick Lundy, Jud Wilson, and "Slim" Jones.
