Cowan Bubba Hyde, an outfielder in the Negro Leagues with Memphis and Chicago, died on Nov. 20, 2003 in St. Louis following a brief illness. He was 95.Incomplete Negro League statistics trace Hyde's career back to 1927 with Memphis of the Negro National League. He is last listed as playing professionally in 1953.
In 1997, he was one of the first players inducted into the Negro Leagues Wall of Fame at Milwaukee's County Stadium.
According to a wire report, his daughter, Almerth Owens-Long said that Hyde tried to join the Boston Braves in 1950, but he had to leave came early to be with his wife, Edith, for the birth of a child. He was cut by the Braves and spent the rest of his career playing in Canada, Owens-Long said.
She said her father would also race, and beat, horses running around the baseball diamond.
According to family members, Hyde continued to play in exhibition games into his 80s and he delivered meals for Meals on Wheels until he was 90.
