OBITUARY - Arthur ‘Ted’ Browne, Died Feb. 2, 2002

Arthur "Ted" Browne, 87, fondly known as "Coach," died of heart failure Feb. 2, 2002. A native of South Jersey, Coach graduated from Woodbury High School where he lettered in varsity football, basketball, track and baseball. He played baseball in the Negro League on the Zulu Cannibal Giants team, sporting his "Zulu" name Lakola.

Coach attended Wilberforce University, Class of 1940, lettering in football, basketball and track, and was named to the Negro College All- American football and basketball teams. After graduation, he played in several semi-pro baseball leagues in South Jersey including Camden's 1st Ward Unit Team. During World War II, Coach toured in Europe, and after the war, he began his years of coaching football at the collegiate level. He coached at Wilberforce University, Edward Waters College, Bethune Cookman College, Claflin College, Benedict College, Elizabeth City State Teacher's College, Norfolk State University and Livingston College
