Monroe La. Monarchs, posted by NSL on 12/4/2004 4:57:30 PM
I have done some research on the Monroe La. Monarchs team that played in the Negro Southern League in the 1930s. The Monarchs featured a number of great players including Hilton Smith, Willard Brown and Leroy Morney. If anyone wants to share additional info about players who played in Monroe, I am interested. Monroe played the Crawfords in the 1932 NL World Series. Many Negro League teams also had spring training in this region, including Hot Springs, Ark. and Grambling, La.

I had the pleasure of knowning a late player named Augustus Saunders who played for this team. He also played for the Memphis Red Sox and Detroit Stars, among other teams. Saunders was originally from Whistler, Ala., and talked proudly of batting against Satchel Paige, his childhood hero. Josh GIbson, Judy Johnson, Oscar Charleston and Paige were among the players who played in the 1932 World Series.

I have researched the Crawfords from 1932 for a project that I was working with. Contact me, I might be able to help you in some trouble spots. I also interviewed Willard Brown, Hilton Smith and others from that team.

Greetings: It is a pleasure to be contacting you. I am very interested in the ballparks of Monroe, LA. Also I was wondering if you have any information about ballplayers from Baton Rouge who played in the Negro Leagues. I am currently researching the career of Dick Johnson. Any information regarding Baton Rouge players will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! Best wishes, Michael J. Bielawa

All, I have written a couple of you asking about information needed re: the Monroe Monarchs. We are working on a project to have a historical marker placed near where Casino Park once stood. Please go to www.monroemonarchs.org and see what we are doing. If you have any information we can use, please contact as soon as possible. Information is very sparse about this era and we need all the help we can get.

im in a play in monroe louisiana that is a tribute to the monroe monarchs. The name of this play is called the game. Out of all the sights that i have been to this was the only passage that had valid information on Augustus Sauders. In the play, i am Rosaline Parker who was a piano player during this time and Augustus fell in love with her. He was truly a gentleman and they actually got married in real life and came to see this play the last time it was given before the both of them passed. It really is an honor to be apart of a contribution to history!

I am trying to do some research and am currently writing a short novel and eventually a screen play of the Monroe Monarchs. History on the players in Monroe is limited. I would LOVE to meet with you and discuss any history on players you may have. I live in Monroe, LA - and am determined to have this story told.

Would you happen to know where Leroy Morney attended High School?
