GRANT ‘HOMERUN’ JOHNSON

Born: Sept 21, 1864
Died: Sept 5, 1953

Career: 1895 - 1916

A shortstop who played his career before the formation of the Negro leagues and was a founding member of the renowned Page Fence Giants, one of the best black teams in the Midwest before 1900.

Moved to Chicago as a star on the best early teams there, then played with topflight teams on the East coast, including the Cuban X-Giants, Philadelphia Giants, Brooklyn Royal Giants and Lincoln Giants…Credited with high batting averages during the prime of his playing career, with enough power in the deadball era to earn his nickname.
