| December 1, 2004 Charles ‘Sleepy’ Chatman passes away. Memphis, Tennessee. Charles Howard 'Sleepy' Chatman, 70, of Memphis, retired from Ivers & Pond, died Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at Methodist University Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lake Grove Baptist Church with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery Midtown. N.J. Ford & Sons Funeral Home has charge. Mr. Chatman, the widower of Minnie Mae Chatman, leaves a daughter, Kim Chatman; two sons, Charles Howard Chatman Jr. and Danny Chatman; his mother, Mary Ella Jones, and two sisters, Shirley Reese and Edna Johnson, all of Memphis, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Sleepy Chatman played for the mid-fifties Negro League Black Barons, Detroit Stars and Detroit Clowns. In 1958, he was offered a contract to play for the Cleveland Indians but a shoulder injury ended his baseball career. | |
